Jets skate circles around Spiders in shut out romp

It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t memorable. But it’s over. The heavily outnumbered Spiders could only — and mostly did — watch in amazement as the Jets ran skating cone drills the entire night. The final score (be sure you’re sitting down) was 15–0.

Highlights? Well, for the Jets, their eight-goal second period must be one for the record books, scoring once a minute from 8:24 remaining to 1:27 remaining, including some textbook snipes from the blue line. The lone Spiders’ penalty, by a high-sticking defenseman Jeremy Litton, got him a much-needed four-second rest, when the Jets scored from the faceoff. Otherwise, the Jets will have plenty to celebrate, with two players having 7- and 8-point nights, three hat tricks, and multi-point nights for everyone else. Even the Zamboni® driver got a point tonight.

If there is good news for the Spiders, they put 18 shots on the Jets’ sub goalie, their best showing since the Olympic ice game in Bloomington against the Lumberjacks on Dec. 9.

The Spiders did get a few chances in the third, trying to erase the shutout, including a breakaway by center Aaron Bedessem, and two scrums in front of the Jets’ net on the following series. But it wasn’t meant to be.

Scouting talent for the Spiders’ C2 squad, the C2 GM, who made a special trip to see the D1 squad in action, could be heard mumbling, “Hey, let’s see if we can contact some of those Jets guys.”

The Jets improve to 4–6–1, and have nicely padded stats, going a total of 24–1 against the Spiders so far this season.

Next up, the third of the three-game stand at the Coliseum, against the Stars (2–6–1–1), against whom the Spiders’ lost in their previous meeting, 7–2.
