Spiders continue to slide...

The Spiders continued their slump tonight losing their 3rd straight match to a hungry Stars team. The Stars were focused and fired up and ready to play as demonstrated by their 5-goal first period. The Spiders were caught in an early Thanksgiving afternoon nap, playing flat-footed as the Stars buzzed around them with 19 shots in the first period.

The game marked the return of goalie Mike Derer and defensemen Michael Armel. Both had recently been approved again for league play after the fracas in St. Louis Park against the Fighting Piranhas during game 1 of the season.

In the second period, the Spiders came to play, outshooting the Stars 6 to 3 and putting two goals in the net. The first marker was scored by Martini off a wristshot low in the Stars’ zone after a face off. The Stars answered with a Power Play goal while Schaefer sat in the box thinking about his slash. The second Spiders’ goal came from center Aaron Bedessem in the high slot on a feed from Paul LaCosse. Bedessem had been pounding one-timers at the Stars’ goalie earlier in the shift, when finally he cracked the nut.

The third period brought more of the same from Stars as they seemed rejuvenated after resting in the second period. The Stars put up 15 shots vs. the Spiders’ 3 in the final period. The Spiders continued the period with some undisciplined play getting a bench minor for too many men on the ice after miscommunication from our penalty box and bench.

On a bright note, Paul LaCosse, the Spiders’ resident cooler dweller, continues his penalty-free streak at 2 games. Paul was quoted after the game: “It’s a kinder, gentler Spiders team, we’re trying to lose our ‘chippy’ demeanor and not play the old-school clutch and grab….well…Monty likes to clutch and grab, but that’s on his own time.”

Spiders fall to 1–4–0, tied with the Stars, next up, the undefeated Royals at Richfield.
