Spiders finally get first win of the season, 6–1 over Scarlet Rebellion

Three games into the season, Spiders finally in the win column, Schuster nets hat trick.

The Spiders took on a new-to-AHA Winter League team, the Scarlet Rebellion. This team made the jump from the now-defunct AHA Women’s League, which was down to three teams coming into the season and therefore, combined with the Winter League. Last season, the Scarlet Rebellion finished in first, 16–2–2, and lost 2–1 in the championship. Following an 8–6 loss to the Black Ice and a tie with the Silverbacks last week, the Scarlet Rebellion were looking for their first win. But so were the Spiders.

The Spider scoring started with Scott Bredael, and ended with Scott Bredael. In between, it was the Dave Schuster show, getting a natural Hat Trick, including one on the game’s first power play. Johnson added another power play goal, and it was Bredael’s bookend that was the third power play goal, meaning the Spiders went 100% effectiveness on the man advantage, and tying the team record for most power play goals in a game at 3 (previously set 3/10/2012 against the Fighting Saints).

On the defensive side of the puck, it was also a record-setting night, with the Spiders having to keep goaltender McCormick awake and alert. In the first, the Rebellion got just two shots to the net. And in the second, two less than that, to set the team record for fewest shots against in a period. The previous record was 1 shot, first set 12/2/2007 against the Royals, then tied against the Fighting Piranhas twice, on 12/16/2007 and 01/29/2012. In the third, a far post clanger almost made it in on a Scarlet power play, but the shutout was negated thanks to some sloppy defense in front of McCormick with just over a minute to go in the game.

Final score: 6–1. Final shots: 46–10.

The two points finally pull the Spiders out of the C3 West cellar, in a tie for fifth with the Ice Dogs, whom the Spiders will face in two weeks. Next week, it’s the Les Etoiles Du Nord, who are in a tie for first.

Puck drops 7:30 p.m. Saturday night back at New Hope N, where they will hopefully have improved ice conditions over last week’s bumpy ride.
