Spiders notch first win of the season over the Wolf Pack

A full compliment of Marc Berris fans filled the stands on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the West Side Arena in Saint Paul as the Spiders bounced back from last week’s penalty-laden game. The Spiders were looking to redeem themselves and show the league that we’re not just a bunch of hacks. In fact, it was the Wolf Pack that spent much of the game shorthanded.

While the 3 fans came to see Berris, it was Spider veteran Mark Franklin they were cheering for in the first period as he opened the scoring with a Dino Ciccarelli-like goal in front of the Wolf Pack netminder. Franklin was quoted after the game regarding his goal, saying, “I felt comfortable on the ice today…much more comfortable than I felt stuffed in that tiny locker room.”

The Wolf Pack battled back and tied the game at one apiece later in the first period. The second period brought one more goal from the Spiders. Brad Caron carried the puck into the zone, and was crashed into by a Wolf Pack defender. Both players went down and somehow the puck lodged under Caron’s breezers. Miraculously, the puck squirted out and was picked up by pressing Spiders defenseman Litton who fed it to Martini for the one-timer. Scorebook should read Martini, from Litton and Caron’s crotch.

The Wolf Pack quickly battled back and tied the match again at 2–2. The Spiders battled hard into the third period when Mike “Monty” Montgomery broke the tie with a goal. Monty used his size to muscle his way into the slot and get solid position for the goal. Monty could not be reached for comment after the game, but his agent gave us this: “Mike has been in conversations with clubs from Ohio and California again; if this goal doesn’t get the attention of the Spiders front office and translate into hard dollars, we may need to start listening to Ohio a little more seriously.”

The Spiders were once again running out of gas in the third period, but were able to hold of the Wolf Pack with many 5-on-3 opportunities at the end of the period. The Wolf Pack found themselves in the penalty box 7 times tonight compared to the Spiders’ 2 visits. Wolf Pack captain Hofer was quoted as saying, “We played a strong Spiders squad tonight; they are to be commended for their team play and really cool jerseys.”

Both clubs move to 1–1 in league standings.
