Zamboni and Spiders come up short in Richfield

The Spiders left the locker room to find the Zamboni stalled in the middle of the rink. The Spiders and Nor’easters teamed up to push the Zamboni off the ice. Ice Dr. Andres, sacrificed his warm up time to repair the hole in the ice. Thank you, John.

The first-place Nordeasters set the tone with significant zone time in the early stages until Olk picked up a loose puck (possibly an errant breakout pass) mid-ice behind the defenders. The goalie seemed shocked and Olk was able to wrist one past M. Setnes (C3 statistical goalie leader) on the Spiders’ first shot of the evening.

Nordeaster (and former teammate of many) Flake evened the score. He scored a goal and earned the game’s first penalty at the same time. Apparently, if you interfere with the goalie in the act of scoring, the goal counts. Flake was sent to the penalty box after his goal. I don’t know if they let him run past his bench for handshakes or not.

R. Johnson jumped on the power play opportunity and put the Spiders up 2–1, breaking the Nordeasters’ streak of 5 games with only allowing one goal. Mettee followed soon after with a break away and beat the league-leading goalie for the third time in the first period 3–1. Box score gave the goal to H. Long even though he was having the same kind of night as the Zamboni.

20 seconds after Mettee’s goal, the Nordeasters added their second goal. 3–2.

Before the first period came to an end, the the officials decided that they needed get involved and called Ungaro for a body check , the Nordeaster whose body also checked Ungaro did not go to the box.

The second period worked out well for the Nordesters when they converted on 2 of 3 power plays. The Nordeaster goalie also got on the board for one of the assists (really?). Meanwhile, the Spiders’ power play was exciting but did not get Tejeda an assist or any goals.

The 3rd period was where the Spiders’ masterclass of squandering opportunities was on display. The box score shows 7 shots, it does not count the fanned shots or missed net. The Spiders played tough to the end and managed to play 3 minutes with an empty net, without giving up an ENG. The moral victory was that the Zamboni got fixed. And the other team said the Spiders are better than their record (3–4–1–1).

Next game is against Growlers (3–4–1–0) on the same Rink 2 at Richfield. We will soon see if the Spiders are better than their record AND if the Zamboni is fixed.

Good game, we will welcome our Captain back.
