Fast start, slow finish for Spiders

The Spiders got out to an early two-goal lead, only to snooze in the second, losing 4–3 to the Wood Knocks.

The Spiders faced off against the Wood Knocks Sunday night at Saint Thomas, in front of a roaring crowd of 2 (the varsity crowd that packed the house for the game before didn’t stick around).

They missed the Spiders getting off to a fast start, with Mike Klein potting a point pass behind the goalie to less than five minutes into the game. That was followed by Olk from M. Johnson and Berman(? … he was in Atlanta for work), to build the most dangerous lead in hockey, which would last until a PPG in the second. The first featured the earliest ever admonishment by veteran ref Michael Bernard, who took exception to the Wood Knocks firing the puck after the whistle. It only took one shift for him to put his warning into action, sending the Spiders to the power play, to no available.

It wasn’t until midway through the second that the Spiders answered back, with Farner in his season debut, pairing up with Olk.

On the ensuing faceoff though, it took the Wood Knocks just 13 seconds to close within one. And with 5 min. left in the second, to tie the game, after which Andres had seen enough.

The stalemate lasted until 4:32 remaining in the third, when the Knocks knocked in the go-ahead goal.

Despite pulling the goalie with a minute and change, plus a timeout as the Spiders placed just five on the ice, a pipe was all the Spiders could find, and the buzzer sounded on the Spiders third defeat of the season.

Final score: 4–3

Next up, pre-Thanksgiving weekend, the Spiders take on the Kan Jammers, with whom the Spiders split the series last season. Another early puck drop, 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Aldrich.
