Spiders get a point

Spiders give up lead, and fall in OT.

The hunting opener weekend left the Spiders’ bench with plenty of stretching room, with a full 9 scratches on the roster sheet. The remaining 10 skaters faced off against an unknown Ice Gators squad, new to C3, after a 16–1–2–1 first-place finish last season at D1.

The Spiders capitalized early, with a perfect D-man setup from Nick Ungaro, with Harry Long putting it away, assist also to Ronneberg, in his first game back after contract negotiations stalled last week. Then the PK got tested, after a phantom (“in the proximity”) trip on Mike Klein.

In the second, the Gators began to capitalize on the Spiders’ D’s mistakes, one early, and halfway through the period. The Spiders answered back on a FanDuel Sports North-worthy highlight pass from Rich Benson to Berman out front.

With the game tied, the Spiders began their PIM parade, first coincidentals for Litton and the Gators’ crease camper. Then an honorary penalty to Benson, as the ref decided the Spiders were guilty of a trip, just couldn’t figure out who to call. The parade was briefly interrupted as the Spiders again claimed the lead, with Long again, this time from the third blueliner setup, Andres. But on the next shift, the Gators re-knotted the game at 3 apiece, followed by a DeBleeckere audible slash on a Gator’s breezers. The last regulation whistle gave the Spiders a late power play, which they considered declining.

With nothing doing, the game went to OT, albeit briefly, as the Gators again capitalized on sloppy cleanup by the Spider D.

Final score: 4–3 OTL.

Goaltender Tejeda stood on his head to keep the Spiders in the game, as the Gators peppered the porous defense, with 35 shots on goal, in comparison to the Spiders’ 21 the other way.

While the Spiders notch up in the standings with the lone point, they are firmly in the Anti-Lady Byng race now, sitting in the top 3 (of 19 C3 teams) for most PIM (behind the Wildcats and Growlers).

Can the Spiders repeat the improbable 102 PIM effort of last season? Stay tuned next week as the Spiders take on the Wood Knocks (1–1), a team the Spiders have never played (though they went 0–0–0–1 against the Gold Rush last winter).

Puck drop 7:40 p.m. at Saint Thomas.
