That is what the Spiders had Saturday night, facing the undefeated Fighting Loons. With just eight skaters available for the early puck drop at Breck, in front of a raucous Loon whistle-friendly crowd, the Spiders had a game plan to forecheck the Loons into submission.
Well, the first period scoresheet tells the story, while the Loons were held to just a goal, the Spiders’ sticks could barely tickle the puck, generating nary a whiff of offense, with one lone shot on goal in the first period, tying the Spiders’ franchise record for fewest shots in a period (first set Dec. 2, 2007, vs. the Royals, and tied the following week, Dec. 16, 2007, vs. the Fighting Piranhas, and again Jan. 29, 2012, also vs. the Fighting Piranhas).
In the second though, the Spiders did find a little offense, but couldn’t quite solve the Loon netminding.
By the third, the Spider legs (and ankles) had about had enough, and the shots were lopsided again, 10 vs. 3.
By the merciful end of the 51 minutes, the only evidence the Spiders participated was in elevated TOIs, as they couldn’t even draw the ire of the officials, for the season’s first PIM-free game.
Final score: 4-rip
