Old guys WIN!
Feb. 10, 2023
The Spiders’ Eric Grotbeck participated in an old guys vs. young kids hockey game for charity, and the old guys actually came out ahead (as did the Hendrickson Foundation)!
The C2 Spartans put on a game to support the Hendrickson Foundation at Highland Friday night, taking on an actual collegiate-level squad, the Macalester Scots, to compete for the Hands of Time cup. The game drew a giant raucous crowd (arrived via bus) to pack the Highland stands, replete with celebrity puck drop by Ryan “White Bear Math” Carter, lineup announcements, anthem singing, intermission entertainment and T-shirt toss. And of course, since Eric is a member of the Spiders, plenty of penalties to go around.

In the first period, Eric actually scored but it was waved off, as he was gently assisted into the Scots’ goaltender. But in the second, he made a beauty goalmouth play to put the Spartans up 2–1.
In the third, Eric found himself on the receiving end of an up-ice jaunt by the Scots’ phenom #97, that led to a Richter scale-registering mid-ice collision, but since at least one of the three refs has worked AHA games, it was Eric finding himself in the bin.
In the third, with the Spartans up 3–2, the Scots got the comfort of some home-town cooking, with a power play for the last two minutes of the game. But Spartans’ goalie Kristel Carlson played out of her mind and on her head, turning away blast after blast, to hold on to the victory, and earn the old guys the Hands of Time cup!
