Spiders dominate first, but end up losing to Bruins 11–5

In the first period, it was all Spiders, with the score 4–2 in favor of the Spiders after one! Then, the season-long curse of the second period took over.

In the welcome-back game for defenseman Paul LaCosse and left wing Lee Martini, the Spiders dominated the first period, getting up by two goals when it was all said and done. Center Dave Schliesman even got a hat trick ... Way to go, Dave!

However, the second period saw five unanswered goals from the Bruins, and the third — which got quite a bit chippy and the officiating a bit too laissez faire — had four from the Bruins, though the Spiders did get one power play goal in the third.

It was one for the record books though, as this was the highest score — five goals — the Spiders have put up without winning the game. It was also the most goals — 11 — the Spiders have let in all season. The short bench on defense meant goalkeeper Jeff Keacher was going to see a lot of shots — 42 in all, though he continued to make amazing saves, stopping 31 shots!

For the math-inclined, yes, that’s five points each on the night for Dave and Lee — way to go, guys!

In the penalty box tonight:

• Defenseman Paul LaCosse, newly returned from injury, and right back in the cooler: 2nd period for having an opposing playing step on his stick (or to be technical, tripping).
• And defenseman Jeremy Litton in the third, for getting boarded and, while standing back up, getting cross-checked (or, according to the ref, roughing). Because of the coinciding penalties for both teams, the 5-on-5 went for three and a half minutes without a whistle after the penalty expired at 10:05. He came out good and rested.

It has been said before, but unfortunately, this time it’s true: they were both innocent.
