Underdogs live up to name

A group of C3 Spiders along with friends from the D2 Wailers and a C3 Puck Hound, got together as the aptly named Underdogs, and spent the summer trying to climb out of the L4 (C3-equivalent) cellar. But summer hockey is about escaping the heat for the free air conditioning courtesy of the local ice arenas, staying in shape and getting to know players from other AHA teams.
Of course, summer hockey also means lousy ice, short benches, and creative (when not indifferent) officiating. The Underdogs even got a lesson in cement base maintenance of the SLP West rink thanks to a July heatwave.
The team went 3–6–1–2 in the regular season, good enough for a sixth-place finish (out of seven). The lone playoff appearance against the Tennessee Tuxedos (Nighthawks) added one more to the loss column. At least it was a “legitimate” loss, as other teams were eliminated by overtime ties and lack of ice time for shootouts, instead falling back on seed tiebreakers.
For the L4 title, the Scooby Doos (Fighting Piranhas) upset the first-place Woody Woodpeckers (Maroons) 2–1.

- And D2 Wailers goalie Mark Lanterman finished in 5th place with an 86.28 save percentage.
In all, a fun summer, and a great way to beat the heat, even if the humidity occasionally led to clouds forming inside the rink.
