Spiders/Royals tie up Hockey Day In America
Feb. 19, 2012
As the closing game of the annual Hockey Day/Weekend In/Across America (HDIA/HDAA) celebration, the Spiders offer traditional American poetry in honor of the Spiders/Royals 4–4 tie on Sunday (thanks to the inspiration of the C2 Spiders, who offered their own Haiku this week):
Little round rubber, slap it once, slap it twice, slap it three times and we’re feeling nice. We get up 3–1 and we feel like the game is done.
A full 51 minutes we must play, oh shit they scored again: what the hay?
A bad pinch, a break away.
Even a diving defense can’t keep the Puck at bay.
We are still up by one, when will this effing game be done.
Behind the net, banked off a pad, tie the game, now we are mad.
Overtime for 5 min.
Might as well have pissed in the wind.
Spider confidence comes at a price, and sometimes disappears when we step on the ice.
And that was all he wrote...

In the standings, with three-fourths of the regular season in the books, the Spiders are coming dangerously close to giving up their top-six spot, the entrance door for the post-season. Sitting behind the Nighthawks thanks to tiebreakers, the Spiders are clinging to fifth place with 18 points. At their heels, the Royals are in a tie for sixth with the Fighting Saints, both with 17 points, with the Fighting Piranhas just a point behind.
With the Puck Hounds likely to lock first, a game and a half ahead of the Wingmen, who are also likely to hold onto second, it’ll come down to the final five games to decide those remaining four spots, with just a two-game spread among the six teams vying for contention. Plus, the Diablos, Sled Dogs and Maroons, all with 12 points, aren’t out of the running yet.
Next up
A rematch with the Nighthawks is next. In fourth place, the Nighthawks handily defeated the Spiders in the third week of the season, and are also coming off a tie, 4–4 with the Diablos.
Game is next Sunday, Feb. 26, at 7:45 p.m. at Breck.
