The Spiders lose a close one to Maroons 3–2

The Spiders were narrowly defeated by the Maroons last night 3 to 2 at St. Louis Park. Even after a couple weeks off for the holidays, it was the best Spiders performance this season.

The Spiders’ two goals were:

  • Late in the second period, left wing Lee Martini from defenseman— his first of the season — Marc Berris.
  • A shorthanded, game-tying goal in the third by left wing Bruce Gustafson, on an assist — also his first of the season — from defenseman Brad Caron.

Goalkeeper Jeff Keacher put up his best game of the season, with 30 saves on 33 shots.

Spiders penalties were numerous:

  • First period:
    • Right winger Mike Montgomery for tripping.
    • Center Dave Schliesman for unsportsmanlike conduct, for playing the puck after the whistle.

This led to a 1:52 5-on-3, but the Spiders PK unit was up to the task and killed it off.

  • Second period:
    • Defenseman Paul LaCosse for tripping.
  • Third period:
    • Defenseman Paul LaCosse for holding. The Maroons scored the heartbreaking go-ahead goal with 1 second left in the penalty, at 4:23.

Our attorneys have reviewed the game footage, however, and all who received penalties were actually innocent. Yes, even Divorceki.

Regardless, congratulations to Paul LaCosse for making the D2 stats penalty minute leaders, with 12, currently putting him in 6th place!

In all, a great game — way to go Spiders!
