Spiders end season by upsetting division-leading Royals ...
March 15, 2008
... Thereby causing them to score many goals on the Spiders. Yes, the first-place Royals (15–2–1–1 heading into tonight and already securing their first-place spot for the season) got a good offensive workout against the Spiders tonight, preparing them for their first-place seeding in the upcoming playoffs. The Spiders, however, didn’t fare so well, putting up a total of zero goals and zero assists.
The good news this week? Penalties were at a bare minimum, with the game’s only calls going to veteran cooler-dweller Paul LaCosse, and newcomer to the gate, at least on his own accord, Bob “Captain Bob” Jensen. The Spiders’ special teams efficiently held the Royals at bay during the two PK opportunities, though would let a goal in just eight seconds following Bob’s return to the players bench.
The Spiders were not without the occasional scoring chance, thanks to some hard work in front of the Royals’ netminder. But it wasn’t quite enough. The Spiders put 15 shots on goal, which, yes, included some rink-long non-icing calls. Special thanks to sub goalie Pat Ridgely, who manned the Spiders’ net, facing 37 shots, stopping 27.
In a season where shutouts were served up aplenty, the Spiders added one more on the losing side, final 10–0, wrapping up the 2007–08 season at 3–17.
