Sled Dogs Top Spiders 5-3 to Tighten C2 North Standings
March 7, 2010
Coming into the showdown at Breck on Sunday night, the Spiders had a chance to put a stranglehold on the C2 North. Their opponent was the second place Sled Dogs who the Spiders had tied 3-3 and beat 4-3 earlier in the season.
The Sled Dogs scored first midway through the first period on a shot through traffic. The Spiders tied it up during a 5-on-3 power play less than two minutes later as Tim Stalpes blasted a slapshot past the Sled Dog netminder. Dave Schliesman added his 8th goal of the season late in the first with a helper from Jim Maietta. At the end of one it was the Spiders up 2-1.
The Spiders had another power play midway through the second period but a bad bounce in the offensive zone led to an odd man rush the other way and the Sled Dogs went up 2-1. As the period progressed, the Sled Dog forecheck got going and created a lot of pressure in the Spider zone. The Sled Dogs finally broke through with a goal at 5:29 of the period. With Maietta and Greg Lindsley in the cooler, the Sled Dogs added another goal to finish the second period with a 4-2 lead.
The duo of Jim Maietta (1 G, 1 A, 2 P, 4 PIM) and Dave Schliesman (1 G, 1 A, 2 P, 4 PIM) continued filling up the stat book as Maietta scored his 12th goal early in the third to get the Spiders within a goal.
Jim Maietta scored less than three minutes into the third to pull the Spiders within a goal. The Spiders stepped up the pressure but the Sled Dogs were up to the task. A 2-on-1 rush put the Sled Dogs up 5-3 with just over five minutes left in the game. The Spiders pulled goalie Brian Dow for an extra attacker late but couldn’t get any closer. Final score – 5-3.
After the loss to the second-place Sled Dogs, the Spiders still hold a half game lead in the division. The Spiders have four games remaining in the regular season and the schedule is truly brutal. Next Sunday is the 3rd-place Muskies (who dominated the Spiders 5-3 in the previous meeting), the Dragons, the 4th-place Warriors, and 5th-place Renegades.
