Spiders celebrate ‘sweet sixteen’ – Part Deux
March 1, 2009
Spiders newly crested #16 records second consecutive hat trick as the Spiders cruise to a 7-1 victory.
The female fans went crazy for their new hero, goal-scoring sensation, Mark Bortnem. He did not disappoint as he opened the scoring for the Spiders just five minutes into the contest with the help of line-mates Delsing and Tromiczak. Just 2 minutes later assistant captain Jim Maietta put home a bank shot into the corner pocket and the rout has begun... Just a minute later “Dino Ciccerelli” Bortnem, camped at the doorstep, finds the net for the second time (unassisted) putting the Spiders up 3-0 as the first period came to a close.
Early in the second period, Bortnem picks up where he left off by tipping in a blast from Litton. The game was delayed for several minutes as the Aldrich custodial staff swept the barrage of hats off the ice. Shortly after play resumed, at the nine minute mark, on the power play, Greg Lindsley put the Spiders up 5-0. The aggression of Renegade #10 was starting to show as he picked up a goal and a penalty in the final minutes of the second frame.
As the third period emerged, I don’t know if it his three pre-game red-bulls, his wanting to honor Dow’s request for more action or if he just got geeked up at the realization that his childhood idol, Jack Carlson, was the ref for the game, but Jack Delsing respected the legacy of Jack Carlson by going out and getting three third period penalties. That was not a typo...three third period penalties! Maietta and Forcelle were able to catch the third period from the stands as the Spiders had no need for Right Wings in the 3rd. During the three power plays, the Renegades could only muster 4 shots and they yielded a short-handed goal to Spider all-star, Doug Thorson. Tim Stalpes put on the exclamation point by recording his first goal in a Spider uniform.
Final Score: Spiders 7, Renegades 1
