Spiders win streak ends at 6

The Spider six game win streak came to an end with a 3-1 loss to the Fighting Piranhas.

The Piranhas got on the board first as they capitalized on a Spider defensive zone turnover. Zach Freeman knotted the score early in the second period as he tapped in a loose puck off a deflected shot from the point. The goal is Freeman’s first in the Spider sweater.

The game remained tight until back-to-back Long-and-Long penalties late in the third gave the Piranhas 1:58 of 5-on-3 time. They needed only 16 seconds to score the go-ahead goal. The Piranhas added an empty net goal banked off Josh Cagle’s backside from 120’ to make the final score 3-1.

The Spiders played a good defensive game, allowing only 23 shots, and Brian Dow was strong in net with 21 saves. Piranha goalie Bobby Osum was equally good, stopping 22 of 23 shots.

The loss drops the Spiders ½ game behind the B3 East leading Barons with two teams facing off on Sunday, March 12th. Good news – the Spiders have clinched a playoff berth based on other results in the B3 East division. This will be the Spiders first playoff appearance since moving to B3 and first since losing 1-0 in the C1 championship game in 2013 to the same Fighting Piranhas squad.
