Spiders take care of the Leftovers leftovers

With four players missing, including three of the four in the captain role, the Spiders dug into the subs and put out a team of thirteen that was more than equal to the task. The third place Leftovers struggled to find enough players to field a team and ended up with just seven. After the game, it was time to enjoy the win, however, for 52 of 54 minutes the team took care of business.

It wasn’t easy in the early going, but against the under-manned Leftovers, the Spiders pressured their way into a five-game winning streak with a 7-2 victory.

The scoring started slowly but the team managed to amend for most apparent mistakes as they drove the increasingly tired legs of their opponent into the ground. At the end of the first period, the lone goal came from blasting Bob Maietta (5), as he roofed one over the sprawling goaltender.

The second period was where the scoring frenzy took place. Spiders jumped out to a 5-0 lead and appeared to be well on their way to a rout. Goals came from Armagost, his first of the season, Adelman (8), Bortnem, his first, and Tromiczak (6). Then the two minutes struck and gave the Leftovers a glimmer of hope. Spider goalie, Brian Dow, making his 13th consecutive start, stopped Steenerson’s shot in the low corner from the blue line. Sorock found it in the blue paint for a tap-in goal. One minute later, Kellenberger was on the receiving end of a nice tic-tac-toe passing playing and the period ended 5-2.

Acting Assistant Captain, Matt Adelman (9), had a rousing speech and came out just 12 seconds into the period and blew one over the shoulder of Bleistein who ended the night with 48 shots against. Any hope for a comeback by the opposition was squashed. Hilden (9) added one more for good measure.

Historically, the Spiders have not fared well after a nearly two week break, but circumstances, hustle, strong defense and solid goaltending put them in an position to put on a scoring show. If it were not for the yawning net misfires, shots hitting the post, and general missed opportunities, the Spiders could have put up a double digit number. (Bortnem was asked for comment but declined.)

The highlights of the night were special teams at 50% and two players notching their first goals of the season.Ad Matt Adelman ended the night with the number one star with a three point night.

Next up is the Lakers who have yet to lose in regulation.
