Spiders drop second straight game
March 3, 2013
A short bench and a much improved Puck Hounds squad led to an ugly 6-2 loss for the Spiders on Saturday afternoon.
With only 8 skaters expected, Cody Yard’s arrival was a welcome sight. Yard had been on the IR since mid-January with an ankle injury sustained in a game with the C2 Roadrunners. Seeing as he was needed, Yard answered the bell for the Spiders. Still at 9 skaters, the Spiders took the ice hoping for the best.
After being promoted from C3, the Puck Hounds started the season slowly. That would be expected but the Puck Hounds had shown signs of improvement lately, beating the second place Sled Dogs and Rack Attack.
Jim Maietta got the scoring started, just 27 seconds into the game. The Puck Hounds answered less than a minute later then scored three more consecutive goals stretching into the second period. Maietta added his second goal of the game to close to 4-2 before the Puck Hounds added a pair of goals to complete the scoring.
There have been times when a short bench led the Spiders to skate smarter and still pull out wins. It was not to be on Saturday as the Puck Hounds routinely got the Puck behind the tired Spiders d-men and controlled the puck in the offensive zone. Tired legs led to numerous penalties and the Puck Hounds took advantage.
Such is life in the AHA. We all do this for fun so family commitments, work trips, and even guys weekends occasionally take precedent. Sometimes you get away with it but the Puck Hounds are team on the rise, sure to be a playoff contender in the coming years.
With four more games to go in the regular season, the Spiders still hang on to the lead in the division. Holding a commanding 2 ½ game lead just two weeks ago, the reeling squad is now hanging on to a ½ game lead.
The Spiders will look to end the losing streak at Richfield on Friday, March 8th against the Aces. The Spiders have made two complete turns of the schedule, beating the Aces 3-0 and 6-2 during the last two match ups.
