Spiders scoring onslaught continues, top Aces 6-2

After the shock of being down 1-0 just 10 seconds into the game, the Spiders re-grouped for a workmanlike 6-2 win over the Aces on Wednesday night.

After giving up goals just 1:25, 0:51, and 0:15 into games recently, the Spiders out did themselves on Wednesday night. With the sound of the opening whistle still echoing through the arctic environment of the Hopkins Pavilion, the Aces got on the board just 10 seconds into the game. The Aces won the faceoff, skated down the wing and a fluttering shot from the left circle eluded netminder Brian Dow.

Jay Hilden knotted the score midway through the period as he picked the corner on the Aces goalie. Matt Adelmann added a pair of goals late in the first to extend the lead to 3-1.

Aaron Bedessem added a goal in the second. Jay Hilden tallied his C1 East-leading 11th goal in the third before Dave Schliesman finished the scoring. Schliesman continued his hot streak as he has found the back of the net in four straight games with a total of seven goals over that time frame. When you’re hot, you’re lucky and that was on display with his goal on Wednesday. With the clock ticking down, Tim Stalpes flipped a puck up high over the defenseman to a cherry-picking Schliesman. Schliesman miraculously knocked down the fluttering puck off the bounce and went in alone on the goalie.

Dow played a stellar 50 minutes and 49 seconds of hockey, making several big saves to keep the Aces from getting back in the game. Finishing with 22 saves on 24 shots, Dow improves to 7-1-1 on the season with a .906 save percentage.

Although the Spiders scored six goals, Aces goalie John DuCharme deserves some kudos. The Spiders controlled play for long periods of time and put some quality shots on net, only to be denied by DuCharme. If he hadn’t been on his game, the Spiders could have put up 10 goals.

With the recent scoring binge (6, 6, 10, 6, and 6 goals in the last five games) the Spiders are dominating the C1 East leaderboards. Jay Hilden, Jim Maietta, Dave Schliesman, and Aaron Bedessem are all tied atop the scoring list with 12 points. Hilden, Maietta, Schliesman, and Matt Adelmann are all in the top 10 in goals scored while Bedessem, Maietta, and Josh Cagle are the top three in assists. Maietta leads the division in penalty minutes with Jack Delsing lurking although neither of them are probably adding this one to their resumes. Brian Dow leads in goals against average at 2.33 and is second in save percentage.

The Spiders have 16 days off to prepare for the rematch with the Royals. The Royals beat the Spiders 5-3 in the first meeting of the season. The rematch on January 18th will be a rare Friday night game with faceoff at 9:00pm at Richfield 2.
