Spiders dominate Sled Dogs 6-2

Neither wind nor snow nor allowing a goal in the first minute could stop the Spiders Sunday night as they took a 6-2 win over the Sled Dogs.

The Sled Dogs got on the board in the first minute as a blocked shot caught Spiders goalie Brian Dow out of position. Less than a minute later, Matt Adelmann tied it up as he extended his goal scoring streak to three games. The Spiders continued their Shock and Awe campaign as Jay Hilden, Jay Hilden again, and Dave Schliesman extended the lead to 4-1 by the midpoint of the first period.

The onslaught seemed to demoralize the Sled Dogs as, except for a few minutes in the third period, they didn’t apply much pressure the rest of the game. Mark Bortnem added a goal in the second period to make the score 5-1. The Sled Dogs found the back of the net once more in the third period before Dave Schliesman capped the scoring to end the game with a 6-2 count.

The Sled Dogs were limited to only 28 shots on net and Brian Dow stood tall in net, turning away all but two shots.

While the score would indicate it was an easy win, a few fortunate bounces early allowed the Spiders to break the game open and coast home. You can bet the rematch will be closer as this is only the second time in seven games between the teams the game has been decided by more than one goal.

The win moves the Spiders to second place in the C1 East division with the result of the Royals/Thunder Chickens game on Sunday night not yet posted.

The Spiders next take the ice on Sunday, December 16th at Braemar South against the Rack Attack. The Rack Attack won their division last year but have had a rough go of it this year, currently sitting at the bottom of the standings with a 0-5-0-1 record. With the exception of their all-star netminder, the core of the team returns so there’s no reason to believe they won’t get rolling at some point. The Spiders, of course, will be out to delay that for another week.
