Captain Dave outscores Warriors!
Nov. 21, 2010
In what has historically been one of the fiercest rivalries in all of sports, this contest was a kindler, gentler version of the Spider/Warrior bouts we’ve come accustomed to. Perhaps it was the many rookie players donning the black and gold. Whatever the cause, your Spiders dominated from face-off to buzzer to record their third straight victory.
It was like poetry on ice watching the red & black skate, pass and score. They brought with them a speed and finesse game that left the warriors dumbfounded and unable to compete. Dave Schliesman opened the scoring on a top-shelf blast from the high slot area. While the play was dominated by the Spiders (13-5 in shots), the Warriors were able to answer the bell as they knotted the score late in the period.
The play evened out in the second but it was the red army that was able to capitalize as Harnett tossed in a knuckle ball off the pipe, off the goalie and in the mesh. Hilden scored just a couple minutes later on feeds from the body and the net-minder. Yes you read correctly, Spider Goalie Brian Dow is on the scoresheet for something other than penalties. (I mean shut-outs)
In the 3rd, the Warrior goalie began to get sunburned on the back of his neck from the goal light being lit up so frequently. #24 notched his second of the game, Tim Forcelle netted his first of the season and Hilden picked up his second of the game all in the first 9 minutes of the period. The Spiders did not rest playing with a big lead. They kept up the attack out-shooting the Warriors 12-7 in the final frame.
Spider ice crew heading out to sweep up the mountains of hats littering the ice following the Dave Schliesman hat trick.
As the scorekeeper was saying “one-minute remaining” over the loudspeaker, Spider captain Dave Schliesman pounded in his third of the game...Hat-Trick! Hats were raining down on the ice as the Spider fans erupted with excitement. The game experienced a 10-minute delay as the Spider ice crew swept up the mountain of hats that littered the surface. When order was restored and the final seconds ticked off the clock. Spiders win 7-2.
In a related story, the media wire has gone crazy this week in speculation on the severity of the injury to hot Spider net-minder Brian Dow. He took a nasty fall while leaving the ice and was seen limping into the locker room. The Spider media department has been hush, hush about the injury but someone close to the team was quoted as saying, “Thank goodness for the holiday break, this gives us extra time to rehab the knee.” Will Dow be in the nets when they face the Admirals next? Spider fans sure hope so. Get well soon.
