Spiders lose 4-2 to Jackalopes in B2 debut
Nov. 1, 2019
With a mix of returning skaters and new additions their 2019-2020 roster, the B2 Spiders put up a good fight, but ultimately came up short in their B2 tier debut in a 4-2 loss to the Jackalopes on Oct. 30 at Breck Ice Arena.
The Jackalopes, two-time defending champs at the B2 level, got on the board rather quickly, just five minutes into the first period, after a screened slapshot from the point found net. But the Spiders quickly responded less than two minutes later, with 10:14 remaining when winger Matt Adelman netted his first goal since undergoing season-ending neck surgery less than one year ago. He was assisted on the play by defense pairing of Joe Reudy and Hank Long.
The Jackalopes proceeded to score two quick goals with 8:52 and 6:43 remaining in the first, giving them a 3-1 lead after one period.
The Spiders narrowed their deficit to one on a power play goal from center Christian Peterson with 11:13 remaining in the second period. Peterson was firmly planted in front of the slot and quickly redirected a crafty pass from Long who had snuck into the corner from the point. Reudy also recorded an assist on the play.
But just when the Spiders thought they had shifted the momentum, a coupling of two costly penalties within 30 seconds of one another led to a two-man advantage goal by the Jackalopes with 7:58 remaining in the second period.
Neither team scored in the third period, despite several quality chances by both teams.
Goaltender Greg Buell turned away 31 of 35 shots. The Spiders recorded 25 shots in the contest.
The Spiders will have a shot to notch their first win of the season Friday, Nov. 8 at Richfield Ice Arena against the Heat.
