Spiders Make It Five in a Row
Feb. 25, 2017
Spiders made their third trip to Highland S since moving to B3 to face the Spitfires. This game was listed on the schedule as Family Night for both teams and the attendance did not disappoint.
The Spitfires and Spiders met for only the second time in franchise history. The home team took care of business with Captain Wilson notching a hat-trick. This game would be Murray’s turn.
The Spiders took a commanding lead with three goals in the first period. Adleman, Murray, and Hilden each added to their season totals picking their opportunities with Peterson, Bedessem, and Buckalew carrying their team leading assist totals.
At the intermission it was all high-fives and the excitement lead to another two goals to open the second (Murray, Long). Then the breakdown started. Screen goal, seeing eye shot, and a turn-over had Captain Wilson emerging from the penalty box to call timeout with hopes that the hemorrhaging would stop. And what a timely timeout it was. As the team huddled, the overwhelming message was calm down, play our game, and have fun. Though the score remained 5-3 at the second, the momentum seemed to be returning to the home team.
Two minutes into the third and a defensive let down put a breakaway goal into the back of the net and the players were gripping their sticks just a little more tightly. Assistant Captain Cagle’s saucer pass to Yancey for the one-timer less than 60 seconds later showed the resiliency that this team has displayed all year. Any hope for a comeback was squashed as the Spiders posted 22 shots on goal and a total of four more goals including Yancey’s (Yancey, Hilden, Yancey, Murray). The final goal came with just 48 seconds remaining to provide Murray with his first Spider hat-trick.
Spiders face the feisty Minnesota Loons on Sunday with the roster looking a little lite with 10 skates checking in.
Game notes: The team already has 5 players with double digit assists compared to only 3 last season. Adelman and Wilson are in a close battle for the second place penalty minute position behind Hank. Dow’s GAA and continues to slip as he lets produces another 4 goal game.
Attendance: 45
