Spiders win battle with Warriors for first victory of the season
Nov. 2, 2008
Spiders capitalize on 2 first period tallies, stingy defensive play and solid goaltending to notch first “W.”
Good thing our arachnid crusaders had extra oxygen tanks on the bench, they were needed as we were a few legs short of being a full Spider squad. With a short bench the gameplan called to attack the net early. This is exactly what they did as Jim Maietta scored just three minutes in on a perfect feed from Thorson.
No strangers to the field of battle, the Warriors stormed back with a goal of their own just a minute later. Thorson capped off the first period scoring (assisted by Lindsley) with 4 minutes left to give the Spiders an early 2–1 lead.
Not only did the Spiders take that lead into the first intermission, they took it into the second intermission as well.
Strong defensive play was the battle cry for the third period as the spider legs grew weary. Backed by incredible goaltending, our defensive corp delivered by killing off three third period penalties (Forcelle and Maietta for tripping and T. Stalpes for Checking...all innocent by the way!) In the end, Brian Dow turned away all 12 third period shots the Warriors could muster. In the end...SPIDERS VICTORIOUS!
Three stars of the game:
- Doug Thorson – 1G, 1A; GWG
- Brian Dow 25 saves, 96% save pct
- The “D.” Cagle, Harnett, Stalpes and Stalpes...The wall that stops ’em all!
