Spiders calm Chaos with 5-4 win
March 13, 2016
Round two of Dow’s return and a team that was better prepared, proved to be enough to provide a winning season against the B3 Chaos. Confidence in the defensive end, two full lines (now, look, we should be able pull together 13 skaters!) and some offensive prowess answered the bell.
It didn’t look good at the beginning officially :16 into the game (though the clock actually read 16:49). Spiders won the opening faceoff and promptly iced the puck. The Chaos won the subsequent draw and fired the first shot of the game through bodies and it deflected off the post and in. Two minutes later a seemingly harmless shot deflected and found its way into the net and the home team was already facing a 2-0 deficit.
Murray finally put the Spiders on the board with his third goal of the season. Nearing the end of the first period, it appeared that they were on their way to tying the game up with the second power play, however a pinch and a stumble and the Chaos regained their two goal lead.
What started as a game low in penalties, turned into a parade to the sin bin. By the end of the game, the two teams combined for 13 penalties and could have added another five or six if the game had been called more tightly.
In the second period, Stone netted his fourth, Hilden scored his fifth, and Trommy added his tenth goal of the season. When the horn sounded, Spiders found themselves up 4-3.
The final period had the Chaos scoring midway through to tie. As the game was reaching its final four minutes, the Chaos managed to shoot themselves in the foot with some unfortuitous vocal altercation with an official. What started as the Spiders short-handed, turned into even strength for a minute and a power play for two. That’s when the defensive duo of Jacobson & Tromiczak put the game away with the fifth goal of the game.
Spiders have one more game this season. The team scoring title, the assist title, and the penalty leader are all up for grabs. The playoff teams have been decided, however, the Wild are vying for a third place finish and the Spiders hope to play spoiler.
