Spiders streak past Warriors

The plan worked!

What plan, you ask? Remember the part in Ocean’s Thirteen where Scott Caan and Casey Affleck infiltrate the Mexican dice factory so they can make loaded dice for use later when robbing the Bank Hotel & Casino? That’s what the Spiders had going on Sunday.

After a demoralizing 4-0 loss late last season, the Spiders had to have some way to slow down the young, fleet footed Warriors. The plan started with high powered Allianz executives Dave Schliesman and Jim Maietta calling in some favors to get Matt Adlemann a job as a summer intern at the Zamboni factory in Paramount, CA, where Adlemann sabotaged a drive shaft destined for St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights. The payoff came as the Zamboni came to a stop only half way onto the ice before the Spiders/Warriors game, courtesy of the a broken drive shaft. The previous game did a fantastic job chewing up the ice, resulting in an ice surface unfit for even the worst pond hockey game – perfect for slowing down the Warriors. MWAHHAHAHHAAHAA!

Just as planned the Spiders dominated play early, out shooting the Warriors 11-2 in the first period. Jim Maietta, with something to prove after his own teammates called him a goon after two penalties last week, netted two goals in the period.

The Warriors had jump in the second period, thoroughly dominating the Spiders in the opening minutes. Strong goaltending, blocked shots and some quick whistles helped keep the Warriors off the scoreboard. The Spiders slowly started to pick up the pace with Aaron Bedessem, Jay Hilden, and Jack Delsing scoring to extend the lead to 5-0 at the end of the second.

Late in the third period, Bedessem scored his second of the night and third of the season to make it 6-0. Just as a shutout seemed in reach, the Warriors finally got on the board as a soft, deflected dribbler sneaked past Dow on the glove side, partially due to ice conditions. By the end of the game there were snow drifts three feet high in the corners and gashes in the ice deep enough to swallow a man!

Spiders win 6-1! All in all, a pretty solid win over a pretty good team. Officially, the Spiders outshot the Warriors 27-22 but I guarantee Warrior goalie Mike Anlauf would tell you he saw more than 27 pucks.

The Spiders improve to 2-1-0 with the Warriors falling to 2-1-1.

Next up for the Spiders are the Beavers on Sunday, November 25th. Face off is at 7:50pm at West Side arena. Plenty of good seats still available.
