Spiders lock up pool championship with 3-2 comeback win
April 15, 2012
In nearly a mirror image of the Spiders 3-2 win over the Fighting Piranhas, the Spiders beat the Rack Attack 3-2 to secure first place in pool A of the C2 playoffs and advance to the semi-finals.
As usual, the Spiders got the best of play early and took a 1-0 lead on a Jim Maietta goal. The Rack Attack got the next two and the Spiders started the third period in a 2-1 hole.
Showing a lot of heart and testicular fortitude, the Spiders battled back and Jim Maietta notched his second and third goals of the game for a 3-2 lead.
After the ice was cleared of hats, the Rack Attack started pressing but the Spiders were up to the task. Strong goaltending from Brian Dow, including a key stop on a breakaway, and team defensive play kept the Rack Attack at bay and the Spiders took the 3-2 win.
The pool championship sends the Spiders to the semi-finals where they will face off against the much-hated Zephyrs. The Spiders took a 5-4 win over the Zephyrs in November while the Zephyrs bludgeoned their way to a 4-4 tie in January.
