Inconsistency Dooms Spiders in AHA Fall Tournament

Hopes were high as a solid nucleus of Spiders players as well as some friends took the ice for the AHA Preseason Tournament. The tournament format had the Spiders playing the other three teams in their pool (Blizzard, Muskies, Admirals) with the winner of the pool moving to the championship to face the winner of the other pool.
The first game pitted the Spiders against the Blizzard and the level of play of the Spiders matched the quality of the ice at BIG 2. A general lack of discipline in the defensive end and a collection of bad bounces led to a 5–1 loss. This brings the Spiders lifetime record against the Blizzard (aka Spider Kryptonite) to 0–3 with a goal differential in those games of 17–6. After the game the Spiders drowned their sorrows with the complimentary beer from Summit Brewery and came up with the game plan for the game against the Muskies.
Saturday afternoon brought more bad ice and more inconsistency from the Spiders as they tied the Muskies 3–3.
Injuries and kickball tournaments took their toll on the Spiders roster as only 10 skaters dressed for the second game on Saturday. The Spiders broke open a close game with four quick goals in the late first and early second period to take a 5–1 lead over the Admirals. Because of the tie-breaker rules, the Spiders knew they needed a win by a large differential as well as a Blizzard loss next door to move to the championship game on Sunday. This desperation led to several breakaways for the Admirals as they scored late to make the final score 6–4.
As statistically improbable as it seems all four teams in the pool finished with 1–1–1 records. Goal differential became the tie-breaker and the Spiders -2 total was last in the pool. The Blizzard moved on to the championship to face the Beavers. Results were not available at the time of publication.
