Spiders tame Mad Dogs in 8-4 win

After yielding two goals in the first four minutes of their Sunday night tilt with the Mad Dogs, the B1 Spiders (2-1) went on an offensive tear – including a hat trick from Aaron Forsman and playmaker from Christian Peterson – in their 8-4 win at New Hope Ice Arena.

Nine different Spiders recorded a goal or assist over the course of a game that played tighter than the final score indicated.

The B1 veteran Mad Dogs (0-3) scored during the first shift of the game. They added to their early lead with a second goal less than two minutes later. During that short span of time the Mad Dogs created a slew of scoring chances – many of which helped account for their 25 recorded shots during the first period (to the Spiders 11).

After the Mad Dogs went up 2-0, Spiders goalie Greg Buell asked for an equipment timeout to fix (with the help of tape) a toe strap issue with one of his leg pads.

It may have been incidental, but that break in the action allowed the Spiders to re-group and re-tool their approach, which quickly paid dividends when winger Jason Vinar scored back-to-back goals on the same shift at 12:12 and 11:42 of the first period. From that point, the Spiders began moving the puck well through the neutral zone, and their quick legs wore down a Mad Dogs team that ran out of bite as the game progressed.

Jason Yancey boosted the Spiders to their first lead of the game with 7:39 remaining in the first period when he planted a swift backhand from the slot behind the Mad Dogs goaltender. It was Yancey’s second goal of the season. Center Christian Peterson recorded the assist.

The Mad Dogs bounced back quickly and scored two goals within the span of 78 seconds as a lively first period drew near a close.

After that ping pong-style opening stanza, the Spiders locked down their opponents defensively in the final two periods. Those efforts were rewarded in the form of five unanswered goals for the Spiders, four of those coming in the third period.

Aaron Forsman scored the only goal of the second period at 12:24 (assist by George Forsman). That tied the game at 4-4.

Aaron found twine again, just seven seconds into the third period (assist by Matt Adelman). Ryan Wilson helped the Spiders add to their lead with a goal from the point. Christian Peterson fed Wilson the pass during a 5-on-3 power play.

Forsman then added an unassisted goal, and center Shane Lauinger ended the night with a breakaway goal, with just 52 seconds remaining.

The Spiders are seeking their third win of the season this Saturday, Nov. 17 at Eden Prairie Community Center, where they will face the Lakers. Puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
